My new netbook, the Asus 1001P review

Recently I purchased a nice refurbished netbook, the Asus EEE PC 1001P from ebay seller buyit247-shop for £167. Just before purchasing I called customer support to ask when it would arrive, they informed me that it would arrive Friday (I was ordering Wednesday evening, so pretty fast delivery) customer support was nice and fast, straight to the point. Good stuff :)

Sure enough Friday morning my netbook was delivered. My brother got first grabs on it though, as he was curious as to whether it would run second life in Windows, and I obviously wanted to install Ubuntu. I was dubious as to whether it would work, but curiosity got the best of me. We installed and ran second life, It ran very well considering this is a netbook, the FPS was choppy but the game actually ran and was reasonably playable, that's saying a lot for a device that's not designed for gaming at all!

After getting it back from my brother, I proceeded to break out one of my USB MicroSD card readers I bought for my Jogglers and used the Ubuntu Startup Disk creator to put Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix on it. unfortunately I couldn't get this to work (I found out later this is because in the BIOS for the EEE, "Removable Device" does not mean USB drive, the USB drive is in fact classed as a hard disk. Weird.) So I opted for plan B and with some help from the folks over at ubuntu-uk IRC channel I started to install using Ubuntu's netboot and PXE. This took a few hours as it had to download all the packages from the web, and my connection only does 400KB/sec or so. So I went shopping.

While I was shopping I realized "Oh crap, I left that thing installing an operating system and it's not plugged in, and we've been playing games on it all morning!" I came home to find it happily chugging away with the last parts of the Ubuntu install. I didn't plug it in as I was curious to see exactly how much power the poor thing had left, especially since we'd been putting it through it's paces (playing games and installing operating systems is a fast way to drain your battery!)

Up came Ubuntu netbook remix, and I looked at the battery monitor. To my surprise it was 50%! It had been doing heavy work for 5 hours solid now and amazingly still had all this power left! I also noticed that according to Ubuntu the battery was from a 1005P, and was at 99.4% Capacity. So free battery upgrade and full capacity in a refurb, nice!

Next I figured I'd see if I could run Compiz, so I went and installed simple ccsm, fired up the appearance dialog, visual effects, custom, and set ccsm's profile to "Ultimate". (I never give my hardware an easy life). This worked fine though, It's perfectly happy with the compiz cube/sphere, Animations, and anything compiz can throw at it!

Up next was MythTV of course. This worked great. Watched lots of TV in bed with this thing. Unfortunately recently I've been having issues with playback where the playback window is transparent, It's probably because I did something to break it though. I have a reputation for breaking things. :)

My friend sailerboy gave me a nice config to enable 2 finger scrolling and a few other bits on my touch pad which is fun. I've attached the script at the bottom of this post.

Been using the netbook for a couple of weeks now, absolutely loving it. The battery ended up lasting an amazing 7 hours and 45 minutes on day one before I had to unpack the charger. With optimization I have no doubt that the claimed 11 hours on this laptop is possible.

The keyboard is full pitch and easy to type on (I've typed on it a few times in the dark even and it's not that difficult), The touch pad is very nice and doesn't jump or get stuck like on some Laptops. The buttons are nice, It also has Asus Express Gate which is a little Linux distro built into the kernel, but it's a bit pointless as Ubuntu netbook remix boots in about 15 seconds more, so I havn't found myself ever wanting to use it.

The screen is a little dim in direct sunlight, but I think that goes for most laptops. It was still perfectly usable in sunlight.

Over all a very nice netbook, I can't get enough of the battery life on this thing. I'd laugh if they made an extended battery for this, you could get 24 hours easy. Great service from the people at buyit247-shop too. All good :) Here's some pictures
