The T-Mobile UK Madness

A couple of days ago I woke up to this article on slashdot explaining that T-Mobile was cutting my mobile broadband allowance from 3GB to 500MB, or 83% Less. T-Mobile justify this saying that 'If you want to download, stream and watch video clips, save that stuff for your home broadband,'. I find this rather funny, as on the same basis we should all just not bother with phones at all, we can always talk next time we see them, right? The whole point of a smart phone is to be able to do these things. That's why we paid for ridiculously priced smart phones.

My reaction to this news was to phone up T-Mobile and immediately cancel my contract, luckily I'm on one month rolling so I was able to do this. I phoned up and went straight to their cancellation department and asked for my PAC Code (A migration code to allow me to keep my number when switching to another provider). The lady then asked me why I was switching, and I politely explained that the recent changes to the fair usage policy was the reason, and that 500MB when I was paying for 3GB is a very big change. She agree'd with me but said that they "Only made this change to be in line with other mobile operators". My reply to this was "except three" (Three is another UK mobile provider that has tiered tariffs ranging from 1GB to unlimited) She put me on hold for a while, told me my PAC code, told me it was valid for 30 days, and then instantly hung up on me. Weird.

Next day I got a call from a supervisor in t-mobile again asking me why I was leaving. I once again explained that the fair usage policy had changed, and that 500MB was a lot less than 3GB. She told me that I still have my 3GB allowance, and that the 500MB changes only applied to the iPhone and as I have an Android device I'm unaffected. I asked why the media in general would say that they are lowering their cap to 500MB with no mention of iPhone if it wasn't the case. She said she didn't know and that I should rely on the T-Mobile website for news, which is fair enough. She then went on to assure me that I was on "Unlimited 3GB" wait what? Yes, Unlimited 3GB. I pointed out that the two terms where contradictory, She said it's Unlimited browsing, 3GB downloads (Isn't browsing a download, anyway?) I asked what happens when I go over the 3GB. She said "Nothing"...Again, rather confusing. Why is there a 3GB limit if nothing happens when you go over? She assured me that there was no throttling, over charges, letters or anything if I went over the 3GB. Seems rather strange. The other reasons I pointed out for leaving was that they tried to charge me for an unlock PIN for my old phone, essentially putting a password on my phone and holding it for ransom. Her response was that "All the other operators do it" T-Mobile seems to like this line a lot. Even if all the other operators don't do it, they still say it :)

My next reason for leaving was the terrible speeds I'd been getting off T-Mobile, with 5 bars HSDPA I'd get around 128kbps. She asked if I'd called about this before, I said yes and that they'd told me to go somewhere with a better signal, even though I have 5 bars of HSDPA. She said that she'd put a note on my account and I should call technical support.

Last and not least I pointed out that I had already terminated my contract with T-Mobile, and started with Three and that it was a bit too late to be trying to fix the numerous problems I'd been having (I had previously said I was going to leave if the problems weren't solved). She said that maybe I can sign up with T-Mobile again next time (Yea, right...) and said goodbye (yay this one didn't just hang up on me).

I went and checked up on the whole iPhone thing, I can find no mention of it on the T-Mobile website, or anywhere in fact. Their page did how ever have a new announcement stating that the changes to the fair usage policy would only affect new and upgrading customers.

In summary, that's a total of 3 different stories from T-Mobile, first the lady agreeing with the 500MB story in the news outlets, and stating that it was in line with other mobile operators. Second that it only applied to iPhones, and third that it only applied to new and upgrading customers. At best this is a complete shambles, and at worst it's an attempt to change the contract in their favor while many people are still stuck in a contract with them. The amount of people leaving clearly hurt them enough to backtrack, but this is too little too late for all the people they have already lost, and in my opinion they deserve it. I really am fed up with ISPs that try to sell unlimited internet to people who won't use it, and withdraw the service from anyone who does. Good riddance T-Mobile, I'm off to hopefully greener pastures with Three.
