So, you’ve started using ubuntu, and you want to setup your games in linux? No problem.

First, your going to need to get wine. I recommend getting the latest version of wine by following these instructions this will make sure you always have the latest version of wine with the built in update manager.

Once you’ve done that, go to applications > accessories > terminal, and type
wine --version
If the terminal responds with something like wine-<version number> then your good to go, otherwise you’ll need to go back to the wine install instructions, because you missed a step.

So, you’ve got wine. What next?
Simple, get steam or install your game from the CD/DVD as you would normally.

Once you’ve done all that, your good to go! But check out the tips below to make things even better.

Set command line options
Open steam and go to the My Games tab. Right click on your game, then click properties. In the general tab, click set launch options. Here you will want to set some launch options. Here is a list of frequently used options.

-dxlevel 81 Forces directx 8.1 mode, Wine hasn’t fully implimented directx 9 yet, so this is a good idea.
-dxlevel 90 Forces directx 9 mode, This is a little laggy, but it works fine.
-window Forces the game to run in windowed mode
-w WIDTH -h HEIGHT Forces the game to run at WIDTHxHEIGHT resolution
+mat_hdr_level 0 Switches off some weird light reflection stuff, makes L4D run drastically faster
-novid Skips intro movie

I’d recommend using -dxlevel 81 and +mat_hdr_level 0 on any hl2.exe based game. Heres an example:
-dxlevel 81 +mat_hdr_level 0

First, you need to find out your screen resolution. If you don’t know it, check out System > Preferences > Screen resolution. My resolution happens to be 1280×1024, so we’ll use that for example.
Follow the set command line options above. you’ll need to add the -window, -w and -h options. The height is your resolution, minus the size of the panels, so for me that’s -w 1280 -h 976. My whole command line looks like this:
-dxlevel 81 -novid -window -w 1280 -h 976 +mat_hdr_level 0
Ok, now you’ve done that you need to hide the titlebars and window borders. To do this you need to install the compizconfig-settings-manager package. click here to install it Now go to System > Administration, then it’s either Advanced Desktop Effects or CompizConfig Settings manager (depending on which version of ubuntu your running). Now find the “Window Decoration” plugin, and click on it. Click the + button next to decoration windows. Fill the form in as follows.
Type: Window Name
Value: hl2.exe
Relation: And
Invert: [x]
Now repeat the above for Shadow windows.
Job done, you now have fake fullscreen

Edit: If you are running compiz you can set the resolution to exactly the same size as your screen, which will make compiz legacy full screen support kick in. Good for multi-screen users that are having spanning problems.
