A little while ago I woke up to this email.

OIM sponsors community servers, usually more than covering the running costs. In exchange for this, we brand the MOTD space of certain source based titles. We run advertisements through a commercial media agency for known, relevant and respected brands. Experience has shown that gamers are receptive to the advertisements and understand that the revenues from them go towards supporting the server communities. We are currently working with known and respected clans such as Hellsgamers and Lotusclan amoung many others who provide revenue for servers running the games we support: Counter Strike Source, Day of Defeat Source, Half Life 2 deathmatch, Left 4 Dead 2 and Team Fortress 2. As an extra service we also can provide targeted website based advertising which attracts a much higher rate than existing services. The offer does sound interesting, and after a little emailing back and fourth I decided I'd accept their offer. I'm writing this in the hopes that other server admins who recieve this email will be able to find this post and get information about what the deal is.

The adverts are all flash video on autoplay, the content of the adverts is usually food/game related, eg duke nukem forever and wendys. They offered me $1.50 per 1000 views of the MOTD.
This is obviously a very nice offer, however there are a number of technical issues I noticed once I had implemented their adverts.
The major issue is that the MOTD does not unload when you press continue, this means that after your players have pressed continue, the video will continue to play in the background. The player is then faced with the choice to either continue listening to the advert, or leave your server. In my opinion this reduces player counts. Also, Flash video is actually quite resource heavy. This can cause lag for some players.
Another issue is that some players have glitches/crashes when you use flash in the game. This is a very small minority, but worth noting.

On the upside however, I spoke to the lead developer of OIM. He was very polite and seemed eager to solve the issues. I spoke with him a lot on how it would be implemented, and even exchanged some code.

In summary, and obviously entirely my humble opinion, this is what I think accepting this deal will do for you
1) If you get players, it'll probably make you money. Somewhere between $10 and $70 a month per server, depending on how popular your server is.
2) It'll probably reduce your player counts.
3) You'll probably get shouted at, people tend to hate auto play video adverts.
4) If you have a community, there will probably be one or two sad goodbyes from people who can't connect because of crashes and/or graphical glitches.

This company is comprised of really nice people, and I think that given time, it could work well. However in it's current state I decided not to have it on my server. My community is important to me, I'd rather make a loss than lose even one community member. The fix for the major issue sounds like it's coming soon, although this will still leave the crashing / graphical glitching issue. Also from my understanding, there is no decent way to unload the MOTD as soon as you press continue, the best I could get was to have it stop once you select a team, and I doubt OIM will be able to get any better than that either.
